Heart Medications - What They Do & Why They Are Important
Heart Medications
There are a dizzying number of medications that are prescribed for the heart, all used for different reasons. Some are given for prevention of cardiovascular disease – to reduce your risk of developing further heart problems and in some, to prevent another cardiac event such as a heart attack or a stroke. In others, medications are to slow the progression of heart disease. There are also medications that treat symptoms, such as palpitations or chest pain.
All medications I recommend are explained in detail to you, so that you understand why you are taking them and ensure they are individually tailored to your condition and make sure they are compatible with any other medications you take.
The British Heart Foundation created an excellent suite of videos about how common heart medications work in our body, a project which I was invited to be an expert reviewer for the BHF.
If you have a heart rhythm condition and would like a medication review, or a discussion on your options other than medication, I would be delighted to see you in clinic and give you an expert opinion.
